Every Christmas in my household we devour a lot of chocolate. The traditional Terry’s Chocolate Orange is a staple and with this year being my first Christmas dairy free, I was determined not to miss out when everyone was getting into the festivities. Whether you’re vegan, dairy free or just trying to be healthy then this recipe is a must try this winter.
It’s super comforting, delicious and indulgent but is packed full of antioxidants, fruits and vitamin C. I took a little inspiration from a recipe Zoella made in 2013, minus the dairy and calories. Check out her version here.
You will need;
- A large orange
- Plant milk of your choice
- Raw cacao powder
- Sweetener of choice (honey, agave, brown/coconut sugar or stevia)
Begin your festive drink by cutting the top off a large orange.
Remove the flesh by juicing and spooning the heck out of your orange ~ you can eat this while you go or save it for smoothie making but keep some of the juice to add to your hot coco in a moment.
Once your orange is hollow measure out a mug of your chosen milk. Surprise, surprise I went for good ol’ almond. Warm in a saucepan on a low heat and add a teaspoon of Raw Cacao powder. Raw cacao is unprocessed cocoa with a rich chocolate taste, it contains powerful antioxidants and B vitamins. Add a healthy sweetener of your choice, I’ve been addicted to Sweet Freedom’s Choc Shot lately which is an all natural chocolate sauce made from fruit extracts and carob. Stir until combined into a heavenly chocolate treat and add a shot of the orange juice.
Pour the delicious mix into your orange to serve and grate in some orange zest from the top of the orange.
Now enjoy by the fire with a Christmas film and some biscuits on the go.
I hope you enjoy my healthy twist on a chocolate orange, you don’t have to miss out on the fat filled, festive favourites if you use the right ingredients.
Let me know if you tried it out and follow me on Instagram for food inspiration during the week.
